February’s PGRT program will explore the updated rules regarding distributions from IRAs, including the new rule for liquidating inherited IRAs under the recent 2024 final tax regulations. Christopher Hoyt will identify opportunities where a family can fulfill its philanthropic objectives and receive the greatest tax-benefit from naming a tax-exempt charitable remainder trust as the beneficiary of a retirement account, rather than having the IRA fully liquidated (and taxed) to family members in just ten years. Professor Hoyt will also illustrate the benefits of lifetime gifts from IRAs after age 70 ½ (“QCDs”) and the new rules that let eligible IRA owners receive a charitable gift annuity in exchange for an IRA gift
