“Do not stand idly by the blood of your neighbor” (Leviticus 19:16)

As we mourn death of George Floyd and watch the subsequent protests taking place around our country, we recognize the deep pain of the Black community and the inequities that exist in our society.

The Associated and its network of agencies join with the Jewish communities around the country in expressing our solidarity in the movement towards a more just society, and we share in the grief at the hatred and prejudice that still exists today.

Sixty years ago, we fought together for civil rights… today we need to join forces and fully support our colleagues, our neighbors and our friends, and become better educated about the challenges facing the Black community.

We are guided by many core Jewish values that call on us as Jews to play an active role in improving the quality of life for all mankind including:

  • Repair the World/Tikkun Olam – Making a positive difference in the world through the pursuit of social justice, especially here in our community of Baltimore.
  • Respect – Respecting and welcoming others by being present, being supportive and listening carefully.
  • Education – Practicing lifelong education and learning from others, especially when it comes to the impact – both past and present – of our implicit bias and structural racism. Today, as we watch what is happening across our country, we must begin to truly understand a more complex narrative. And, as an organization and as a Jewish people who are committed to social justice, we must strive for stronger relationships, deeper understanding and trust across all our communities.

At The Associated, we must continue to stand united in the face of injustice and intolerance for all victims of discrimination regardless of race, religion or ethnicity. And we will partner as a network in this effort for a more just and tolerant society.

We join faith leaders across the community in unity as you will read in the attached letter signed by the Baltimore Jewish Council’s incoming Chair of the Board. Together we will make the world a better place.
