In Sephardic communities, winter Friday nights have traditionally been a special time for Shirat HaBakashot (Songs of Petitions) – when people gather after dinner to sing ancient melodies together. Inspired by this tradition, Avihay dreams of creating our own musical space here at Pearlstone, where we can explore together the beautiful melodies of various Jewish traditions, joining our voices in song during these winter evenings.

The world of Piyut represents an extraordinary cultural treasure that we are gradually losing touch within our modern lives. These ancient poems and melodies form a rich mosaic of Jewish creativity, offering us glimpses into the lives of Jewish communities across different times and places. Each melody carries within it stories of hope, longing, and cultural richness – from the markets of Yemen to the synagogues of Morocco, from the hills of Kurdistan to the shores of Spain.

Together, we’ll rediscover this musical heritage that speaks of love, hope, and spiritual yearning. These melodies have been vessels for Jewish expression for generations, carrying the dreams and prayers of communities through times of joy and hardship. By singing these songs together, we not only preserve these precious traditions but also create our own connection to this timeless chain of Jewish musical expression.
