Where I Hope the Baltimore Jewish Community will be in Five Years

Rabbi Yechiel Shaffer, Pikesville Jewish Congregation

The Baltimore Jewish community has an illustrious history defined by its integrity and values. Most significantly, these values have guided our community’s impact on the broader world. I hope and pray that Baltimore, in the future, will continue to be defined by the values of unity, tradition and a wholesome commitment to goodness.

While the Jewish community has grown massively over this last decade and the speed with which the world is changing on gets faster, Baltimore has found a beautiful balance between change and tradition. As we look to the future, I hope that our education institutions are strong and impactful, and play a large role in shaping Jewish life.

I hope and pray our community will be safe and deeply connected and invested in the State of Israel. I hope we will find new ways to connect with each other, online and in person, while also deepening our understanding of the differences between us.

In five years from now, I hope that it will be true that the Baltimore Jewish community will have an array of strong institutions that assist us in living vibrant Jewish lives, while also pushing us to think more deeply about our Jewishness.

I hope we will have articulate individuals who can motivate us to engage with Torah ideas, and encourage us to learn with and from each other. I hope Jewish institutions that champions Chessed, education, advocacy, and Torah study are deeply integrated in the day-to-day fabric of Jewish life, and that the impact of these institutions reach beyond the Jewish community.

I hope that our community will play a significant role in fixing our city, in increasing the safety of our neighborhoods and enabling as many of our young people to live wholesome, engaged and impactful lives.

I pray that our city will be defined by faith, peace and love in the years ahead.
