Marci Elkins is a member of the Jewish Grandparents Network Baltimore, a local program that is managed in partnership with the Jewish Community Center, an agency of The Associated. We sat down with Marci to chat about why she joined this program, and what it means for her Jewish identity and that of the next generation.

Part of a larger, national organization, the Jewish Grandparents Network works with grandparents around the country to help raise the next generation of Jewish families. For the Baltimore affiliate, the group tries to find meaningful programs within The Associated system and outside of it, that enriches Jewish engagement.

Marci considers herself incredibly lucky. She gets to be with two of her grandchildren, Ryan and Mazie, five days a week. This means plenty of trips to Challah Tots, Jewish preschool and tons of holiday activities throughout the year, just to name a few. And while she has two grandchildren out of state, Marci says that doesn’t stop her from spending quality time with them, especially as it relates to their Jewish upbringing.

As to why she is a part of the Jewish Grandparents Network, Marci’s answer is very simple. She loves connecting people, especially when it comes to Judaism.

“I led a grandparent program that discussed all the holidays with the children. It was just an hour, but it was a great opportunity to introduce the children to the holidays and for the grandparents to be a part of it.”

Speaking on the aftermath of October 7, Marci has said it has been difficult and scary. While she says her grandchildren aren’t necessarily aware of everything going on in the world, she and her husband do everything they can to try and make them feel safe.

“They have no idea what’s going on. My heart breaks for them. I think we can just be there for each other. Community support is huge.”
