Let’s Go Back to Camp: Camp Nai

By Sarah Hiller

I’m a camp person. Since 2002, when I was 9 years old, I have spent nearly every summer of my life as either a camper, staff member or volunteer at Camp Louise in Cascade, MD. Until I heard about Camp Nai Nai Nai, a Jewish summer camp experience for young adults, I would have never dreamt of going to another camp. But the opportunity to relive my days as a camper — making new friends while trying new activities and building intentional, pluralistic, Jewish community was one I could not pass up.

I first went to Camp Nai East in 2021, when I was freshly vaccinated and just getting reacclimated to the idea of large in-person gatherings. I met a lot of wonderful people that year, but almost all of them lived in D.C., New York or another non-Baltimore place.

When I learned from Ali Duhan, Director of The Associated’s Young Adult Division (YAD) and my friend from Camp Louise, that YAD was recruiting a group of Baltimore young adults to go to Camp Nai this year over Labor Day weekend, I was so excited for the opportunity to go back to camp this time with a group of people who I could subsequently stay connected to within my local Jewish community.

While Camp Nai Nai Nai took place over four days, instead of the four weeks or longer I used to spend at Camp Louise, I truly felt the magic of Jewish summer camp all over again. Getting to experience that as an adult, to step away from the stressors of everyday life and into a community of radical acceptance, added a whole other layer to that magic.

Camp is a place where you aren’t valued based on your job or career, where dressing up for a theme night or in Shabbat whites is the norm and where trying something new, whether that be getting up on stage or learning to breath fire, is supported and encouraged by 200 of your newest friends.
