If you don’t know what you need, try writing down your biggest financial challenges as well as your financial goals. This can help you choose a direction for what type of support you look for.

Once you know what your goals and challenges are, A benefits screening would be a great place to start. Before your screening, you will need to compile important documents like your bank statements, W-2 forms, and a list of your monthly expenses. There are countless different services available to people of all income levels. Even if you don’t qualify for public assistance, you might still be eligible for private assistance or benefit from support like financial counseling.

Seeking out supportive services is not easy, and many people find the process overwhelming. You are not alone! Try to stay organized in a way that works for you. It can be helpful to create a folder, either physically or on your computer, dedicated to storing all the information about programs you have applied to. Make sure to write down all your questions in one place as well!

The best time to start saving is right now! Find someone you trust or reach out to a financial counselor who can help you make an action plan to save and connect you to helpful education and resources.

It can feel intimidating to talk about your financial health but managing finances is something we all have to do. Think of someone in your life you trust –a family member, a friend, your local Rabbi- and let them know you’re looking for support.
