After more than a year and a half of extensive renovations, the Jewish Museum of Maryland (JMM), an agency of The Associated: Jewish Federation of Baltimore, recently reopened its doors, unveiling a transformed space designed to position the Museum as a national leader in the field of culturally specific museums and better fulfill its mission of connecting people to Jewish experiences and Maryland’s Jewish community to its roots.
The Museum’s new chapter is marked by a reimagined building, a new website, and a refreshed brand identity. These updates reflect JMM’s commitment to participatory museum practice and to creating an immersive, engaging space for learning, dialogue, and discovery.
Sol Davis, Executive director of the JMM said: “This transformative project ensures that the Museum’s architecture and technologies align with evolving practices in the field. The project represents a substantial investment in Historic Jonestown, and it creates the setting for the next generation of Jewish life and culture to flourish in Baltimore City.”
At the heart of the museum’s transformation is the David M. Rubenstein Exhibition Arcade. The arcade serves as the backbone of the museum, offering visitors an elegant and immersive space to engage with Jewish stories in dynamic and interactive ways. Lined with custom designed display cases that combine collections materials with interactive technologies, the space invites visitors to build deeper connections to the stories the Museum tells.
The museum has also designed the space to grow with its needs, ensuring it remains a vibrant, adaptable home for the community for years to come.
“Baltimore is a great place to be Jewish, and the re-envisioned Jewish Museum of Maryland brings to life the stories, culture and history of our fabulous Jewish community in fresh new ways. The museum is central to The Associated’s mission of celebrating Maryland’s Jewish heritage and providing a welcoming space to explore Jewish identity. We believe that the reimagined museum will be a great place for members of Jewish Baltimore to explore their history and an important bridge-builder to share our story with other communities that call Maryland home,” said Andrew Cushnir, president and CEO of The Associated: Jewish Federation of Baltimore.
JMM’s updated brand identity draws inspiration from Baltimore City architecture and the two historic synagogues on the Museum’s campus. Integrated across the building, website, and programming, the new brand reflects JMM’s dedication to bridging past, present, and future. It invites visitors to connect with Jewish history, culture, and ideas for a shared future.
Next Generations adapts and reinterprets content from Generations, a magazine JMM published between 1978 – 2012. Three curators reimagine material drawn from the magazine’s major themes: nostalgia, migration, and food.
To Say I Was Here is the inaugural exhibition being presented in the Museum’s new R.C. Long Gallery. The exhibition is a collaboration with Baltimore-based record label Canary Records and will present music and ephemera related to 15 early 20th century Arabic, Greek, Judeo-Spanish, and Turkish speaking Jewish immigrant artists.
The Jewish Museum of Maryland, an agency of The Associated: Jewish Federation of Baltimore, is the successor organization to the Jewish Historical Society of Maryland, founded in 1960. In 1998, the Jewish Museum of Maryland was formally established, and the most recent capital expansion of the Museum building was completed. Now, a generation later, the Museum’s modernized building ensures that its mission to connect people to Jewish experiences and Maryland’s Jewish community to its roots can be fulfilled for the next generation.
The Jewish Museum of Maryland is a participatory museum and cultural hub in Baltimore. Rooted in Jewish history, culture, and creativity, the Museum sparks connection and curiosity while exploring ideas and possibilities for the future.
