From Towson to Tradition:
How Jessica Brenner Made Shabbat Her Own

Jessica Brenner

My name is Jessica Brenner. I am originally from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, but moved to Towson, Maryland in 2018 after college. I am a Medical Intensive Care Unit Nurse at The University of Maryland Medical Center and absolutely love it!

I became involved in The Associated’s Young Adult Division (YAD) in early 2024. I grew up in a very Jewish area and was missing that community when I lived in Towson. I got involved to create a Jewish community of my own here in Maryland. Since then, I joined a Rosh Chodesh group, attended Table for 8 and several other events. I became so comfortable that I decided to volunteer to be a YAD Shabbat Host.

I love hosting. I feel warmth and love when people are over and I try to create a welcoming environment. I love to cook and bake and love it even more when I can do it for other people. The Shabbat I hosted in December was the largest number of people I had ever cooked for. I love a good challenge and this one was fun.

My tip for others is to do as much the day before as you can! Set the table, get groceries and cook what you can if it can be served cold. Growing up, whenever we would have people over for Shabbat, Rosh Hashanah, Passover, etc., my mom would always have me and my brother set the table a day or two before. I did this the day before my Shabbat and it saved me from stressing out.

At my Shabbat I decided to have an activity for my guests. Since this Shabbat was a week before Chanukah started, I spit everyone up into groups to make menorahs out of candy. We all then voted for our favorite menorahs. Everyone got really creative!

While Shabbat is a time for us to unwind and be around friends and family, I wanted to give my guests something fun to do to really celebrate the end of a long week.

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to open my house to those looking to spend time with others from the Jewish community and I look forward to building more relationships in the coming year.
