Recognizing the Signs: Supporting Survivors of Domestic Violence

Each October, during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, CHANA, an agency of The Associated: Jewish Federation of Baltimore, reminds us that raising awareness saves lives. It’s a time to educate, to listen and to stand with survivors.

The statistics remain sobering. Nationally, one in three women and one in four men experience some form of physical violence, sexual violence or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Domestic violence continues to impact individuals and families across every community — including our own.

“At CHANA, we continue to see the lasting impact of trauma, isolation and financial stress on survivors,” says CHANA Executive Director Lauren Shaivitz. “But we also see incredible resilience. Every day, our team helps people find safety, rebuild their confidence and reclaim their independence.”

Recognizing the Signs of Abuse

“Abuse is always about one person trying to maintain power or control over another,” says Shaivitz. “That control can take many forms: emotional, financial, psychological or physical. And in times of financial strain, when the cost of food, gas and daily necessities continues to rise, that added stress can make already dangerous situations even more volatile.”

Isolation
Isolation is one of the most common warning signs of abuse. Pay attention if a friend or loved one seems increasingly withdrawn or disconnected. Do they make excuses for not being in touch? Have they become more dependent on one person for decisions or access? That could be a red flag.

Fear
“Fear can be engendered by physical threats or violence,” explains Shaivitz. “But victims can also experience fear through emotional or verbal abuse. If you find yourself constantly monitoring your behavior to avoid angering your partner or blaming yourself for their actions, it may be time to reach out to CHANA for help.”

Hope and Healing

While domestic violence is often hidden, hope and healing are possible with support and community. CHANA provides comprehensive services, including crisis intervention, counseling, legal advocacy, and safe housing, while also working to prevent abuse through education and outreach.

“Awareness is one of the most powerful tools we have,” says Shaivitz. “By recognizing the warning signs and knowing that help is available, we can all play a part in breaking the cycle of abuse.”

She adds, “We want survivors to know: you are not alone. CHANA is here to help and our community is stronger when we support one another.”
