It is said that our rabbinic sages used to argue vehemently about every facet of Jewish custom and observance. They would debate and intellectually ‘duke it out’ and then they would sit down to share meals together, their relationships strengthened by their arguments. It is also said that, at times, debates have proliferated amongst sectors of the Jewish people, and we have been unable to talk to one another. Join Rabbi Jessy for an exploration of the history of argument and debate. What is the difference between a productive argument and one that is not? When does disagreement stand to strengthen us and when does it risk our demise? What are the ‘rules’ for debate that keeps us moving in a positive direction and when does it fall apart? This series is for those looking to learn more about the role that argument and debate has played in the rabbinic tradition with an opportunity to practice some of those skills in the last session. No previous knowledge or familiarity with ‘text’ necessary in order to participate!
