On July 13, 2025, we lost an extraordinary leader, friend and advocate for our community. At the age of 96, Mark D. Coplin passed away, leaving a remarkable legacy gift of more than $6 million to The Associated. This act of generosity that will touch Jewish lives for generations.
Mark lived a life filled with purpose. He was a devoted husband, accomplished attorney and dedicated community leader. After graduating from Baltimore City College, the University of Maryland and the University of Maryland Law School—where he ranked second in his class and achieved the highest score on the Maryland Bar Examination—he built a distinguished career in business law with Weinberg & Green (later Saul Ewing), where he practiced for nearly five decades.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mark was deeply committed to Jewish life. He served as president of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society and the Baltimore Jewish Council, and on the boards of Jewish Family and Children’s Service and Baltimore Hebrew College. Together with his wife, Judith Levinson Coplin, Mark made Jewish philanthropy central to his life. In their legacy statement in the Harry Greenstein Legacy Society Endowment Book of Life, they wrote:
“It has been natural for us to support Jewish philanthropy. As only the second generation of our families in America, we have been pleased to establish a charitable legacy, something that our parents and grandparents were not in a position to do. We hope that this fund will not only contribute to the strength and well-being of the Jewish community but also encourage future generations to do the same.”
Mark’s vision was one of trust in the future. He chose not to restrict his legacy to any one cause, but to empower future leaders to use his gift where it would be most needed. What he and Judith left behind for us was a legacy of care, generosity and commitment; a blueprint for how to live with purpose and heart. May his memory be a blessing.
