In a time when many are examining what it means to be Jewish, it’s important that we come together to make sure that every Jew can explore their Jewish identity safely and openly.
In our latest episode of Around the Table with Beth H. Goldsmith, we are joined by three members of the Baltimore Jewish community, Stanley Scherr, Sarah Vorsanger and Nicki Mann, to talk about their Jewish experiences and how we can all stay engaged.
Stanley grew up Orthodox, but when his mom passed away, he moved in with his aunt. Suddenly he found himself surrounded by a broader community, attending Johnnycake Elementary School and becoming less religious.
Yet Judaism remained integral to his life. As an adult Stanley worked in the Baltimore Jewish community for decades. He participated in The Associated’s Young Leadership program and volunteered at the JCC, helping adults with special needs. He also worked at the Mitchell David Teen Center where he says it was like “becoming Jewish all over again.” Today he volunteers with the Macks Jewish Connection Network as a Community Connector.
Sarah found her way to Jewish Baltimore after moving from New York in 2023. A quick google search later and she quickly became involved in The Associated’s Young Adult Division, participating on a mission to Cuba and is now part of YAD’s Young Leadership Council 2027 class.
And Nicki is no stranger to the community. Having grown up in Pikesville, she is raising her family here. As part of an interfaith marriage, Nicki remains committed to her Jewish identity., Not only has she attended many events hosted by The Associated’s Jewish Professional Women, she recently took part in The Associated’s Inspired Women’s Project, which culminated in a 10-day trip to Israel. A trip, she says, that gave her a tight-knit group of women that is meaningful and special.
Across the board, all three emphasize that helping others engage Jewishly means that we cannot hide who we are. Whether it’s putting a mezuzah on your door or having open and honest conversations with others, it’s important to continue to reach out and connect with each other.
