Financial Wizard Leon Cooperman to speak at Fourth Annual Charles Baum Investment Symposium

Leon G. Cooperman

On Monday, September 11, The Associated: Jewish Federation of Baltimore will host its fourth Charles Baum Investment Symposium featuring legendary investor and billionaire, Leon G. Cooperman, CFA.

The Charles Baum Investment Symposium, which commemorates Charles’ lifelong dedication to the Jewish community and his decades of service to The Associated, will feature Leon Cooperman. Cooperman who will share his investment philosophy and insights into the current financial climate, is the founder of Omega Advisors, Inc. and Chairman & CEO, Omega Family Office, Inc. At its height, Omega Advisors managed more than $10 billion in client funds. Omega Advisors was converted to a family office at the end of 2018. The Symposium will be held on September 11, 5:30 p.m. at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Baltimore North – Pikesville.

Prior to his creation of Omega Advisors, Leon served as General Partner of Goldman, Sachs & Co. and as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Goldman Sachs Asset Management. During his 25-year tenure, Leon was voted the number one portfolio strategist for nine consecutive years in Institutional Investor Magazine’s annual “All-America Research Team” survey.

Leon received his MBA from Columbia Business School and his undergraduate degree from Hunter College. In 2014, Columbia Business School awarded him with its Distinguished Leadership in Business Award, and Bloomberg Markets named him to its fourth annual “50 Most Influential” list (one of only 10 money managers globally to be so honored, selected “based on what they’re doing now, rather than past achievements”).

This symposium, now in its fourth year, has included other notable speakers including Mario Gabelli, David M. Rubenstein, and Bill Miller. It is funded by an endowment created in Charles’ memory to educate, inspire, and mentor our community’s business leaders.

Charles dedicated his time to giving back to the Jewish community and served in a variety of leadership roles within The Associated. He was most notably a 20-year veteran of The Associated’s asset management program. He served as the past chair of the Jewish Community Investment Fund, a position he held for five years. His patience and calm demeanor guided The Associated through the 2008 downturn and set the stage for its rapid recovery.

President of The Associated, Marc B. Terrill, affectionally says, “Charles was a long-time friend, thought leader and advocate for The Associated and its mission. Those of us fortunate enough to call him a friend deeply feel the absence of his wisdom and mentorship. We are grateful to those who funded this endowment so we can ensure Charles’ legacy continues.”

In addition to his work at United Iron & Metal (now United Holdings) with his father-in-law I.D. Shapiro, Charles was a partner at Shapiro, Robinson & Associates, advising professional athletes, including Baltimore’s baseball legends, Eddie Murray, Brooks Robinson and Cal Ripken Jr.
