Tisha B’Av at Beth El Congregation of Baltimore

On Wednesday night, July 22, the Jewish world will observe Tisha B’Av, a solemn day on which we remember the destruction of the First and Second Temple in Jerusalem, the tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people throughout history, and perhaps more relevant than ever – the infighting within the greater Jewish community that has diminished our power in times where we have needed it most.

Wednesday, July 22

6:15 p.m. – 7:45 p.m. Movie screening: Legend of Destruction
We’ll begin the evening with an award-winning animated film that powerfully depicts the events leading to the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. Through stunning hand-painted artwork and historically grounded storytelling, Legend of Destruction explores the internal divisions, baseless hatred, and political turmoil that weakened Jerusalem from within—offering timeless lessons that remain profoundly relevant today.

7:45 p.m. Tisha B’Av pre-meal
We’ll have a Tisha B’Av pre-meal (a Seudat HaMafseket) together and while we eat we’ll discuss the movie.

8:00 p.m. Tisha B’Av service
We’ll move into the Gorn Chapel, turn off the lights, light our candles, sit low to the ground and read from Eicha – the Book of Lamentations. Our Beth El Women’s Choir will enhance the service through their songs.

Thursday, July 23

7:45 a.m. Morning service
We will chant again from Eicha – the Book of Lamentations, after the service for those who are able to stay. Beginning on Wednesday night and until 3 stars are visible on Thursday night – the tradition is too fast for those who are able.

For security purposes, advance registration is required for all attendees.

Beth El Congregation Members: Free
Non-Members: $18

Pre-registration must be completed prior to the event. Registration and payment will not be available on-site on the day of the event. We encourage all attendees to register early to ensure admission.
