Molly Lipman

Molly Lipman is someone who likes to keep busy. She loves exercising at the gym, plays bridge two times a week and loves attending classical music concerts. So it was no surprise to us that she was in the middle of prepping dinner when she spoke to us about how much she loves The Edward A. Myerberg Center and the social activities they offer for older adults.

A Boston native, Molly and her husband moved around the country, living in Cleveland before his work transferred him to Miami. It was there they spent the next 26 years raising a family. Then, 32 years ago, her husband got a job in Baltimore, and they moved up the East Coast. The rest, as they say, is history.

Two years ago, Molly’s husband passed away. And her family has since spread throughout the country.

“Sometimes it’s lonely,” Molly said to us over the phone.

And that, she says, is where the The Myerberg steps in.

Before we begin the interview in earnest, Molly lets us know that she cannot thank the Myerberg staff enough for all the hard work they do.

“Let me just tell you,” Molly says with the biggest enthusiasm, “Innie, Jess, Jenn and Alex, they work so hard. They never stop. I cannot say enough about them.”

And she’s right. The staff at the Myerberg dedicate themselves to making their members live their best lives. Whether it’s taking classes, joining social clubs or simply having a place to exercise. One event in particular, the Silver Single Mingles event, has helped Molly a great deal.

The Silver Single Mingles event is like speed dating but for interests and hobbies. You sit at a table related to something you like, and you try and meet people who share those interests.

Jessica Monaghan, director of operations at The Myerberg, says “Singles Mingles is so important for many reasons. These events are more than just about finding love. It’s about finding a new friend or companion. Someone to go to dinner with or just hang out.”

Molly and her husband used to walk every day. But between Molly’s husband getting sick and covid, that happened less and less. Two years after her husband’s passing, Molly was looking for a walking buddy.

Enter Mary Lou, who Molly met at the Singles Mingles event when someone tipped Mary Lou off about Molly’s love for walking.

“My husband and I used to walk a mile every day. Now I walk with Mary Lou. She’s met me at the Myerberg in the mornings. And actually, I was able to walk farther than I’ve been able to.”

It goes beyond just walking, however. Remember when we said Molly loves classical music? Well, so does Mary Lou. In fact, when we spoke to Molly, they had a concert planned that weekend.

“When you didn’t grow up here, it’s hard to meet people because everyone knows everyone. The staff really make you feel welcome.”

Outside of Silver Single Mingles, Molly regularly attends other Myerberg programs. She’s actively involved with the Bridge club, and she tells us the classes are wonderful, especially the humanities. But her favorite thing to do is exercise.

We asked Molly what she would say to anyone who was on the fence about attending Silver Single Mingles or one of the many Myerberg classes and programs. And her answer was simple. “Warmth. It’s the warmth of the people who work there. The warmth and the smiles of the wonderful people who work there.”
