Catholic University Student Builds
Jewish Identity Through Hillel Partnership

By Rachel Tabeka,
Loyola University, Class of 2029

Initially, I was introduced to Johns Hopkins Hillel by a Hopkins Hillel staff member back in September, about two weeks after I moved into my freshman year at Loyola University Maryland. Being a Jewish student at a Catholic university was a significant shift, as many of the students I met had little prior understanding of or exposure to Judaism.

I was concerned about what my Jewish identity would look like on campus, and I was afraid of losing touch with my Jewish roots while away at school. Once I learned that Johns Hopkins Hillel was an option for me, I was overjoyed.

I first attended Shabbat in mid-September, going in without really knowing what to expect. I brought along my roommate and friend, both of whom are Catholic, and all of us were a bit nervous, hoping the community would accept us even though we did not attend Johns Hopkins.

To our relief, we were immediately welcomed into the community and introduced to many of the other students. I attended services and dinner that evening, constantly beaming to my friends about how grateful I was to be there.

I had finally found a place where I could meet other Jewish students and connect with people who shared a similar background and experiences to my own.

As the year went on, my friend and I continued attending services and Shabbat dinners almost every week, in addition to many of Hillel’s other programs and events. One of the most memorable events, Jew Years, a formal event held at a Baltimore nightclub, became one of my favorite memories from my entire freshman year. At that event, I was able to connect more deeply with other students and form friendships that continued to grow throughout the year.

In addition to the friendships I made through Hillel, many of whom I spend time with outside of Hillel as well, my Jewish identity has grown even more than I expected when I first moved away to college.

Again, being at a Catholic school, I was initially hesitant about how much I would be able to practice Judaism. In complete honesty, I have become more religious and spiritual through regularly attending services. Spending even just one hour each week practicing my Hebrew and finding myself within prayer has been incredibly grounding amidst the challenges that come with school and life itself. Because of my routine of attending Hillel every Friday, I now attend services much more regularly, even when I am home.

Next year, I hope to become even more involved at Hillel now that I have built a strong foundation within the community. Through conversations with various staff members and student Gabbais, I hope to begin leading Conservative services semi-regularly in the coming year and hopefully beyond. Hillel has allowed me to explore parts of my Judaism that I was not always confident enough to pursue but always hoped would one day be possible.

I am incredibly grateful for all the opportunities Hillel has given me, along with the amazing friendships that have come from it. I am beyond excited to continue attending services, participating in fun events and Shabbat dinners, and connecting with other Jewish students while allowing my Judaism to continue growing in new ways.

Hillel has become one of the places where I spend most of my time, whether I am catching up with friends or simply watching a movie with other students in my class year. It has been a core part of my college experience so far, and a strong, welcoming community that I am proud to call myself a part of.

This program is part of a new Associated initiative providing Jewish engagement opportunities to students at local universities without campus Hillels.
