A Baltimore native, attorney and member of the YLC (Young Leadership Council) Class of 2027, Kathleen Godwin Pinsky brings a deep connection to Jewish Baltimore and a passion for getting involved. From her love of cooking to her very specific coffee order, here are six things to know about Kathleen.
Kathleen is a lifelong Baltimorean. She grew up in Mount Washington and stayed close to home for college at the University of Maryland, College Park, and law school at the University of Baltimore.
One of her favorite things about Baltimore, especially its Jewish community, is how unique and diverse it is. With such a large Jewish population, there are so many different backgrounds, traditions and levels of observance represented. Kathleen loves that there’s always an opportunity to learn something new and experience a different part of Jewish life, while feeling welcomed and connected.
“It’s not just about Jewish Baltimore,” she says. “I have been in different countries and met people who are somehow connected to Jewish Baltimore, which is the most fun version of Jewish geography I’ve ever played.”
She remembers one such experience from a trip to Germany, when she met someone whose roommate had grown up in Baltimore. “They had come to Beth El Congregation for services, which is where I’m a member.”
Kathleen is an attorney, continuing a career that has always kept her close to home. Before joining the federal government, she worked as an attorney at both the local and state levels, all within Baltimore City.
“I grew up here, so I feel really strongly about working in my community,” Kathleen says.
“In addition to what I do professionally, a lot of what I could consider my extracurriculars, whether it’s volunteering, philanthropy, being involved in organizations like The Associated, those are all things I try to prioritize my community and helping out where I can.”
Kathleen’s connection to The Associated began several years ago through friends who were involved in different parts of the organization. One of those friends, Sarah David, encouraged her to apply for the Young Leadership Council (YLC) Class of 2027. The two had met a few years earlier and quickly connected over their shared passion for advocating for women and working to prevent violence against women.
Now a member of the YLC Class of 2027, Kathleen has enjoyed getting a deeper look at the work happening across The Associated network. One of her favorite sessions focused on the allocations process, where the cohort broke into smaller groups and was asked to determine how they would distribute a hypothetical pot of funds across different programs. Each group took a different approach, leading to thoughtful conversations about priorities and the decisions that go into supporting the Baltimore Jewish community.
As part of her YLC experience, Kathleen will serve as a board observer for the next year at the Macks Jewish Connection Network. She’ll meet with the board every few months and attend its annual retreat in January, giving her a firsthand look at how the organization operates and evolves.
She’s especially excited to see what’s ahead for an organization with deep roots in Baltimore’s Jewish community. Following a recent restructuring, Kathleen is looking forward to seeing how the organization takes on its next chapter, including through its educational projects.
For Kathleen, the opportunity is a chance to learn from the board and gain firsthand experience in Jewish organizational leadership.
When she’s not working, reading or going for a walk, Kathleen loves spending time in the kitchen. She’s always trying new recipes and has even collected challah recipes from friends’ parents over the years so she can recreate them at home.
Her favorite dishes tend to be hearty and comforting, especially anything that can be braised. Most recently, she made a pasta dish with plenty of shallots, anchovies and tomato paste, topped with a caramelized sauce and served with a parsley salad and lemon.
And every year, she puts that love of cooking to work by hosting Passover at her home. Her townhouse’s entire downstairs is taken over by tables and chairs, but Kathleen wouldn’t have it any other way.
Kathleen usually starts her day with at least one cup of black coffee. But when she’s treating herself, her go-to order is three shots of espresso with steamed milk, a layer of foam and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
And then there’s the exception to her usual coffee routine: Once a year, she’ll indulge in a Pumpkin Spice Latte.
