SUMMARY:Letting Go of the Me to Be with the We: An Evening with Yiscah Smith
DESCRIPTION:Letting Go of the Me to Be with the We: An Evening with Yiscah Smith\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nYiscah Smith is a thought leader\, spiritual activist and agent of change who addresses the spiritual practice of encountering the Divine spark within and beyond. \n\n\n \nYiscah will share a portion of her book anchored in the week’s Torah portion Aharei Mot/Kedoshim. She will discuss a dilemma that the High Priest encounters when performing the special Yom Kippur service. The resolution occurs when an individual becomes part of something bigger than one’s own limited self. This becomes a spiritual practice of connection that nurtures God consciousness in ourselves and the world around us. Quite timely as we live in a world fraught with disconnection\, fear and anxiety. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Upcoming Events\n \n \n\n\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n A Night of Comedy Celebrating the Legacy You’ve Built\n This evening is just for you\, our Circle of Giving donors and Harry Greenstein Legacy Society members. Along the way\, we’ve engaged with important social justice issues and given back through hands-on service\, volunteering with Happy Helpers for the Homeless\, supporting Our Daily Bread\, and baking muffins to donate to those in need. \n\n\n \nAs we close out our year\, we are turning our focus to a cause that matters deeply to us: childhood cancer. Our goal is to raise $5\,000 in support of Pediatric Oncology at Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center\, helping to make a difference in the lives of children and families facing this challenge. \n\n\n \nWe will also be hosting an exciting Afternoon of Trivia for all 8th–12th graders in our community! For just a $15 pledge\, you’re invited to join us for an afternoon filled with fun\, teamwork\, and friendly competition\, all in support of an incredible cause. \n\n\n \nMark your calendar for Sunday\, April 26 at 2:00pm and bring your friends\, your brainpower\, and your best trivia skills. This is the harrowing story of the Jews\, resistance fighters\, and young men escaping forced labor\, who owed their lives to the staff at the ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo during WWII. Using infrared photography and lyrical poetry\, Berger explores the psychological landscapes of the individuals who lived in constant fear\, not knowing from day to day whether their hiding places might be revealed. Nazi soldiers loved the zoo and visited daily\, not realizing that a wall away people were in hiding. Images and text chronicle the struggles of ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances as they spend time with their memories\, take flight with imagination\, and experience longing\, grief and at times terror.Located near the Jewish neighborhood of the Jodenbuurt\, ARTIS served as a hiding place for two to three hundred men\, women and children\, all of whom survived during their time in hiding. The zoo stayed open throughout the war\, and Onderduikers spent months\, even years hidden behind the scenes of animal enclosures in kitchens\, attics and stables. All this took place within the beautiful grounds of the zoo. This setting\, with its peaceful paths\, sculpture gardens\, and inventive architecture that served as hiding places\, provides the stage for telling the Onderduiker’s stories. \n\n\n \nThe photographs and poetry in this exhibition are informed by conversations with the ARTIS Zoo historian\, the former director of the Zoo (an Onderduiker himself)\, and groundskeepers during visits over the past seven years. \n\n\n \nThis exhibition is a collaboration between the artist and students at Goucher College\, whose research and writing provide a foundation for understanding the historical context of this work. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Upcoming Events\n \n \n\n\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n A Night of Comedy Celebrating the Legacy You’ve Built\n This evening is just for you\, our Circle of Giving donors and Harry Greenstein Legacy Society members. Join us for an inspiring conversation about Jewish courage\, defiance\, and resilience. \n\n\n \nAuthor Izabella Tabarovsky brings the insights of her acclaimed book Be a Refusenik to Baltimore. Drawing on the moral clarity of the refusenik movement\, the book offers a powerful\, practical framework for navigating today’s climate of anti-Jewish ideological coercion. Joined by former refusenik Aleksander Smukler and one of this generation’s leading Jewish voices\, Eyal Yakoby\, the conversation explores what it takes to stand firm\, refuse to bend under pressure\, and affirm the full spectrum of Jewish identity in our time. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Upcoming Events\n \n \n\n\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n A Night of Comedy Celebrating the Legacy You’ve Built\n This evening is just for you\, our Circle of Giving donors and Harry Greenstein Legacy Society members. They would debate and intellectually ‘duke it out’ and then they would sit down to share meals together\, their relationships strengthened by their arguments. It is also said that\, at times\, debates have proliferated amongst sectors of the Jewish people\, and we have been unable to talk to one another. Join Rabbi Jessy for an exploration of the history of argument and debate. What is the difference between a productive argument and one that is not? When does disagreement stand to strengthen us and when does it risk our demise? What are the ‘rules’ for debate that keeps us moving in a positive direction and when does it fall apart? This series is for those looking to learn more about the role that argument and debate has played in the rabbinic tradition with an opportunity to practice some of those skills in the last session. Third Space and Baltimore Center Stage saw the potential of a community-wide art project in Baltimore\, and invited ITP to town in September 2025. Led locally by Rain Pryor (Process Director)\, Antoinette Duren (Community Weaver)\, and Oh to Dream leaders Bridgette Burton and Evan Hall (Producers)\, the project has grown to include partnerships with organizations such as Dance and Bmore\, Good Trouble Church\, Beth Am Synagogue\, the Greater Mondawmin Coordinating Council\, the Bawdamore Preservation Society\, and the Baltimore School for the Arts. \n\n\n \nThis spring\, ITP invites community members to continue exploring what brings Baltimoreans together and what keeps us apart through the process of creating art together. \n\n\n \nPerformance of the Community-Made Play — May 3: This is the culmination of a year of generative work and relationships! \n\n\n \nNote: timing is subject to change. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Upcoming Events\n \n \n\n\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n A Night of Comedy Celebrating the Legacy You’ve Built\n This evening is just for you\, our Circle of Giving donors and Harry Greenstein Legacy Society members. DESCRIPTION:“A Jewish Girl in Shanghai” Film Screening and Discussion Panel\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nInterested in the diversity of the Jewish experience? Like niche history? \n\n\n \nJoin the Baltimore Jewish Council for a screening of the animated film “A Jewish Girl in Shanghai.” \n\n\n \nAfter the film screening\, participants will hear from a speaker panel featuring current Holocaust Remembrance Committee member\, Lisa Sparks\, whose mother\, Yvonne Daniel\, was born in the Shanghai Ghetto to parents who had fled Nazi-occupied Europe. Yvonne’s story was a part of the Jewish Museum of Maryland’s prior exhibit on the Jews of Shanghai. Lisa will join in facilitated conversation with Beth Israel Congregation’s Rabbi Rachel Safman. \n\n\n \nLight kosher fare will be provided. Registration is highly encouraged. \n\n\n \n“A Jewish Girl in Shanghai” is set primarily in the Shanghai Ghetto during the Japanese occupation in World War II. The film follows Rina\, a young Jewish girl\, and her younger brother Mishalli\, who have fled Europe in search of safety but are separated from their parents. They encounter A-Gen\, a Chinese orphan boy who helps them navigate the challenges of their new life in Shanghai. Together\, they form a strong bond and face the dangers posed by the occupying forces\, including the Japanese army and their Nazi allies. \n\n\n \nThis film is notable for being the first animated Chinese film to address the Holocaust\, marking an important step in fostering Jewish-Chinese relations. It has been well-received both in China and internationally\, praised for its sensitive portrayal of the experiences of Jewish refugees in Shanghai\, a city that served as a haven for many during the war. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Upcoming Events\n \n \n\n\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n A Night of Comedy Celebrating the Legacy You’ve Built\n This evening is just for you\, our Circle of Giving donors and Harry Greenstein Legacy Society members. SUMMARY:Inseparable and Not the Same: Judaism\, Zionism\, and the Modern Jewish Condition
DESCRIPTION:Inseparable and Not the Same: Judaism\, Zionism\, and the Modern Jewish Condition\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nIn today’s polarized landscape\, Judaism and Zionism are often treated as either identical or entirely opposed. This class explores what is lost in both extremes\, when allegiance to Israel becomes the measure of Jewishness and when rejection of Zionism erases a core strand of Judaism. We will grapple with the reality that anti-Zionism often expresses deep antisemitic sentiments\, even as it also has a long and complex history within Jewish thought and debate. Together we will ask how a more nuanced engagement with Zionism might deepen\, rather than divide\, contemporary Jewish life. \n\n\n \nRabbi Dr. Joshua Ladon is the Vice President\, West Coast and Senior Faculty at the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America\, where he guides the program and development strategy on the West Coast.
