DESCRIPTION:“A Jewish Girl in Shanghai” Film Screening and Discussion Panel\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nInterested in the diversity of the Jewish experience? Like niche history? \n\n\n \nJoin the Baltimore Jewish Council for a screening of the animated film “A Jewish Girl in Shanghai.” \n\n\n \nAfter the film screening\, participants will hear from a speaker panel featuring current Holocaust Remembrance Committee member\, Lisa Sparks\, whose mother\, Yvonne Daniel\, was born in the Shanghai Ghetto to parents who had fled Nazi-occupied Europe. Yvonne’s story was a part of the Jewish Museum of Maryland’s prior exhibit on the Jews of Shanghai. Lisa will join in facilitated conversation with Beth Israel Congregation’s Rabbi Rachel Safman. \n\n\n \nLight kosher fare will be provided. Registration is highly encouraged. \n\n\n \n“A Jewish Girl in Shanghai” is set primarily in the Shanghai Ghetto during the Japanese occupation in World War II. The film follows Rina\, a young Jewish girl\, and her younger brother Mishalli\, who have fled Europe in search of safety but are separated from their parents. They encounter A-Gen\, a Chinese orphan boy who helps them navigate the challenges of their new life in Shanghai. Together\, they form a strong bond and face the dangers posed by the occupying forces\, including the Japanese army and their Nazi allies. \n\n\n \nThis film is notable for being the first animated Chinese film to address the Holocaust\, marking an important step in fostering Jewish-Chinese relations. It has been well-received both in China and internationally\, praised for its sensitive portrayal of the experiences of Jewish refugees in Shanghai\, a city that served as a haven for many during the war. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Upcoming Events\n \n \n\n\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Your Vote Matters!\n We are delighted to invite you to JWGF’s Final Voting Session for the 2025-2026 grant cycle. This evening will unfold in two parts\, with limited seating for the second. Please register early to ensure your seat for the second half of the program! \n\n\n \nThe evening begins in the sanctuary with Adam Neuman and Rabbi Jessy Dressin in conversation about the intersection of sports leadership\, fandom\, Jewish identity\, and inherited wisdom. Neuman will share how his acumen for the sports world was shaped by his upbringing and experiences as an observant Jew through family\, schooling\, and recognizing (or creating) opportunities. Neuman will provide timely insights and analysis based on the Ravens’ current season as they prepare for their Week 12 matchup against the New York Jets. \n\n\n \nFor those interested in learning more about sports leadership\, motivating wisdom\, and how a mensch landed a coveted role in the National Football League\, Adam Neuman will lead an interactive experience after the formal talk. NFL Live may not cover it\, but Adam will share how he has discovered sage wisdom amongst the sports greats\, like Ed Reed\, alongside the rabbinic greats\, like Rabbi Moses Maimonides. \n\n\n \nAdam Neuman serves as Chief of Staff and Special Advisor to the President of the Baltimore Ravens\, where he provides strategic counsel and manages the administrative\, operational\, financial\, and legal activities for President Sashi Brown. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Upcoming Events\n \n \n\n\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Your Vote Matters!\n We are delighted to invite you to JWGF’s Final Voting Session for the 2025-2026 grant cycle. This Soul Center program invites you into the sacred art of tying tzitzit in a macramé style\, transforming each knot into a moment of meditation… all attached to a keychain\, so you can take your mindfulness with you everywhere. This program is part of the “Seven Weeks to Bloom” series\, taking place during the Omer period between Passover and Shavuot. We will tap in to the week’s spiritual power of Malchut\, nobility. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Upcoming Events\n \n \n\n\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Your Vote Matters!\n We are delighted to invite you to JWGF’s Final Voting Session for the 2025-2026 grant cycle.
