Keeping Current with Jess Schwartz

What Is Keeping Current?

Keeping Current is an initiative by IMPACT, The Associated’s Young Adult Group, is an opportunity for interactive experiences and facilitated discussions to build community and talk about hot topics from a Jewish lens.

This program, inspired by a similar program from IMPACT, C.H.A.T. (Conversations Happening Around Town), is also designed to provide awareness and partnership opportunities for those working directly to tackle critical issues in the community. Topics on the program range from food insecurity, mental health and antisemitism.

For each topic, there will be two session programs. One to hear from experts in the field and the second to use that knowledge to make an impact. These important issues will bring together Associated agencies and community partners, including Jewish Volunteer Connection (JVC), Repair the World,  Mazon, Manna House, JCS and BJC.

The first topic is on Food Security, something that Associated Agencies, like Jewish Volunteer Connection, have been tackling in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We wanted to provide a hands-on way to learn about these issues with real next steps about how to get involved,” one IMPACT professional commented on the creation of the program and its partnership with Associated Agencies.

Meet Your Co-Chair

Like IMPACT’s CHAT program, young adults in Jewish Baltimore help facilitate these discussions. Jess Schwartz is co-chairing Keeping Current this year alongside Lauren Sibel, the immediate past chair of CHAT.

• How and why did you get involved with IMPACT?
My brother got me involved in IMPACT as a way to meet new people and get involved in the community when moving back to Baltimore.

• What’s an activity currently keeping you busy?
On the weekends I coach sailing at a local sailing center!

• How do you handle tough conversations with people?
I prefer to handle them head on, while also exploring multiple sides/viewpoints.

• If you could choose a fun hot topic (instead of a serious one) what would it be?
Something like “is cereal soup?” or “is hotdog a sandwich?”

• When the world is fully safe again, what’s the first thing you want to do or see?
Travel abroad!

See You Soon!

Keeping Current begins on May 19 and runs through July 7. Each topic will be explored in two sessions. Be sure to check our registration page for more information!
