Wednesday Morning Series With Dr. Rosann Catalano: Once More Astonished: Poetry And The Religious Instinct

Wed, 31 Jan, 2018 9:30 AM - 10:45 AM

The poet W. H. Auden wrote, “The funniest of mortals, and the kindest, are those who are most aware of the baffle of being.” Living presents us humans with baffling questions beyond both our reckoning and our escaping. Indeed, we are defined in large measure by the nature of our responses to life’s questions, like,  “Who am I really?”, “What am I making of my life?”, “What is the meaning of my life?”, and “Where do I find meaning?” For several years, we have huddled around biblical texts, interrogating their meanings, asking what they may teach us about living the life God intends us to live. This is a different kind of “text” study: the same baffling questions, same interrogation of meaning, but different texts. Let’s explore together the mystery of living through the lens of poetry and its power to both shape and give expression to the religious instinct.
