To Kill A Mockingbird: Whose Story Is It?

Mon, 16 Oct, 2017 10:15 AM - 11:45 AM

Jon Aaron, teacher at McDonogh School will begin the discussion for this 6 part series on Monday mornings at 10:15-11:45 a.m. in the Agus Library beginning on Monday, September 18, 2017. Mr. Aaron will pose the question: To Kill a Mockingbird: Whose Story is It?  To Kill a Mockingbird has remained beloved and relevant since its publication in 1960. Reflecting on the appearance in 2015 of the novel’s “first draft,” Go Set a Watchman, and Harper Lee’s death early in 2016, this course celebrates the author’s gift to the American literary tradition.

Participants are asked to read both books before the opening class so that we can explore deeply the core question of the course, “Whose Story Is It?” In considering this question, we will discuss the following: particular historical ideas at the heart of the novels (ie, Jim Crow); thematically related poetry; various film and video excerpts; a James Baldwin essay; the art of Aaron Douglas and Norman Rockwell; music ranging from Billie Holiday to the Broadway musical Big River; and political cartoons by Kevin Kallaugher.

PLEASE NOTE:  This course is not a lecture series.  All sessions are designed to be discussion-based.  Though some material will be presented by the instructor, participants will be encouraged to share insights and make connections within the novels, to the world around them, and to their personal experiences.
