About Jacob & Hilda Blaustein
Jacob and Hilda Blaustein were among the most distinguished members of twentieth-century Baltimore Jewry. They gave generously of their time and resources to causes that would ensure Jewish survival and strengthen Jewish identity. Each of them – Hilda with her quiet persuasiveness and Jacob with his vigorous forthright manner – has left a lasting imprint of this community.

Jacob Blaustein was a symbol of the American dream come true. From modest beginnings, he achieved industrial success and diplomatic skill, performing missions for five American presidents. He was an eloquent spokesman for human rights and served as a U.S. Delegate to the United Nations. Mr. Blaustein was president of The Associated Jewish Charities and Welfare Fund (now The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore) for three years, national president of the American Jewish Committee for five years, and a senior vice president of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany. A good friend of Israel, he played a key role in its creation and helped to strengthen its ties to the United States.

Hilda Blaustein also won recognition on local and national levels. She was one of the architects of the Associated’s Women’s Division (now Associated Women), serving both as its president and campaign chair. She was also a member of the board of directors of The Associated Jewish Charities and Welfare Fund for many years. In addition, she served as president of the Jewish Educational Alliance and the Federation of Jewish Women’s Organizations.
